 Water

The water covers 70 % of the surface of the Earth, and 70% of our body weight is water. Someone said we carry sea in our blood, meaning sodium chloride, which is present in the seawater; the same salt is also present in our blood. The concentration of salt in seawater, however, is different. The salt present in the seawater is several times higher, 3.5 % to our 0.4 %.

The Blood is a transport medium; to function normally, the osmolarity of the blood is strictly regulated within a narrow range. Solutes move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration, and to move in the opposite direction, a separate mechanism is present, where energy has to be used.

In case a person accidentally drinks seawater, as happens when drowning in the sea. He gets severely dehydrated and water leaks out of the lung capillaries into the oxygen exchange alveoli, and unless promptly rescued, he would die of a lack of oxygen.

In drowning in lakes and rivers, the opposite happens. Water washes away the surface-tension-lowering substance, the Surfactant. The alveoli fail to open up, and the lungs collapse. Fresh oxygen supply is cut off.

Those fish that live in estuaries are exposed to sea and freshwater at every ebb and tide. Fish have special sensors in their gills that monitor chloride concentration in the water. When fish are in saltwater, fish hardly drink and excrete excess salt through the gills and kidneys. When in sweet water, the fish absorb salt through the gills and excrete dilute urine and retain salt through the kidneys.

NASA is planning to colonize Mars because Mars has water, which this one ingredient we must have wherever we go. NASA is also looking at moons of other planets like Europa, Ganymede (Jupiter), Titan, Enceladus (Saturn), and Triton     (Neptune), and all these moons have water, as additional sites for establishing a human colony.

Plans also include building a huge subterranean housing complex, something similar to the people of Cappadocia, Turkey, who built their homes and communities underground many centuries earlier.

While NASA and other private for-profit companies are thinking of abandoning this Earth for a desolate place, another group of scientists is actively dreaming up plans to keep the Earth's temperature from rising and make the Earth more livable.

One plan is to inject aerosol into the stratosphere. The aerosols will deflect light back into space, preventing light rays from reaching the Earth to prevent heating during the day. Another possibility is to draw up super-cool water from several miles below the Antarctic glaciers and spray it over the ice. The frozen ice will not only prevent the Antarctic ice sheet from breaking, but the smooth surface of the ice sheet acts as a huge reflector and keeps Earth cool.

If you are a moneyed man, which one would you invest in, abundant earth or cool it with super cool water.
