Everyone should have an answer to this question because, it is such an important and relevant question for humanity, especially now that a Munachimso attitude is sweeping the world.
Humility, according to Webster Thesaurus is, - Absence of any feeling of being better than others. It really describes what humility is not. So let us examine antonyms of humility. The same Thesaurus lists - arrogance, conceit, egoism, pompousness, superciliousness as antonyms of humility.
Do you see any recognizable sings of arrogance, conceit, egoism, pompousness and superciliousness in the Head of State of the most powerful country of the world? If that is a norm then why not all of us should be like him.
If you have taken classes for public speaking or the company you work for sends you for a preparative course for a leadership position in the company, then you know. They teach you assertiveness, and aggressive ways of speaking loud and clear. Boldness, brashness and audaciousness are some of the techniques that help you to get there.
If you are also a regular church goer, you hear a completely different story from the priests. Priests read from the gospels of John and Mathu. You learn that Jesus, the son of God came in this world to heal the sick, help the poor. Jesus being the favorite of God, he was also most humble. He was full of humility and ready to serve anyone down in disease and poverty. Jesus said, “Blessed are poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom in heaven’ (Matt 5.3). God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. The priests give more examples from Proverbs like those exalts have a high view of themselves and that kind of pride is hated by God. In the gospel of John, he cites examples of humility of David, Mary and Joseph.
If you think the world appears to have lost its moral compass. Think of the days when the world witnessed brutality at the hands of Genghis Khan, Tamar Lange, Iltutmish, and even Alexander whom we call The Great. If you visit Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, it would be an eye opener. Mongolians treat Genghis Khan not simply as the founder of their nation but also a god. In Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. A big monument prominently displays a statue of Tamar Lange and publicizes his achievements but not a word of his cruelty to the defeated soldiers and the civilians. Ask any Persian about Alexander's cruelty. After a battle he would round up all the defeated soldiers and quartered them and spread the body parts on the battlefield for others to see. And the word reached the neighboring countries, they surrendered unconditionally. Iltutmish was a lunatic, after a war, he would order to cut the head off all the prisoners and ordered to make a pyramid of heads for his enjoyment.
It took centuries for humility to be a virtue, especially if you are strong and powerful. Humility is considered as meekness and a sign of weakness by them. Are you ready to join them and beat the powerless to a pulp or bring the society back to civility and show humility in dealing with others to those who are not your own kind.
