Eternity.
Eternity means forever. Eternity is not limited by constraints of time and “everlastingness” means forever, but within the boundary of time.
In ancient Egypt, the Pharaohs made elaborate arrangements for an eternal life after death. The pictorial writings on the walls of the secretive burial chambers and their elaborate funeral books tell their stories of how a pharaoh accumulated wealth and man-power for his comfort for eternity in the afterlife. It is said that as soon as a new pharaoh ascended to the throne, he would start collecting money, gold, and valuables for that purpose; not unlike the Washington congressmen who start collecting donations for reelection, we see nowadays.
Jewish, Christian, and Islam religions have a common root, even though there are many outward differences in the interpretation, all of them believe in an eternal life. Jews place emphasis on the present human life, Christians prepare for an afterlife, either in heaven or hell, and Muslims expect to go to Behest, God willing. Buddhism predated Christianity by 500 years and its followers are engaged in the pursuit of the end of suffering and the attainment of Nirvana. Followers of the Traditional Religions of India ( Sanatani Dharma) believe that the final destination of the human soul is the Brahman, the Spirit that always existed and will exist in eternity. The knowledge contained within the texts of the Vedas is also eternal.
The names of many stories and movies have the word“eternity” in their titles. James Jones' novel “From Here to Eternity” was made into a Hollywood movie in 1941. The story is about sailors' life in Hawaii Naval Station and the story ends with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and death, divorce, and separation. Is this movie want to say - death and war are eternal, or the duty-bound sailor's life. I hope it is the latter.
What Science says about eternity:
No one understands time any better than Eisenstein. In his Theory of Relativity, he introduces a new concept - the Block Universe.
The Block Universe Theory:
He suggests that all the events that happened in the past, events that are happening at present, and those that are going to happen in the future are existing simultaneously within the spacetime as a four-dimensional block. In this concept, time is a dimension, and time does not flow linearly. In a way, the distinction between past, present, and future is an illusion.
Key points.
Time is a dimension of Spacetime and all events coexist.
The spacetime is a geometric structure.
All events are predetermined.
Humans are deterministic and mechanistic. The leaner flow of time from past to present and into the future is inherently recorded in the human brain. Sweeping all future actions under the predetermined and influenced by the actions of the past and present is counter to everyday human experience. There is a strong opposition in the scientific circle to this block universe theory. In India, however, this view is widespread to the extent that when religious centers of ancient India were attacked and looted by invaders, no organized armed militia or public came to defend because they took it as predetermined.
Who knows whether Indians came to know the Block Universe theory centuries earlier!!
