 Gordian Knot

No.19

A Greek legend said that the future ruler of Asia would be the one who could untie the Gordian knot. Gordius was a poor Phrygian (Turkey) peasant who became king of Phrygia by an oracle. He tied his wagon to a pole with an intricate knot, with the ends of the rope hidden and prophesied the qualification for the future ruler of Asia. No one could untie the knot until Alexander of Macedonia in 333 BCE came and cut the knot with one chop of his sword.

This story is similar to the one about Christopher Columbus making an egg stand on its end at the dinner table during the reception given by Queen Isabella of Spain for his discovery of America.

Nowadays, the Gordian knot is used as a metaphor for solving a difficult task by unconventional means.

In 2015, Kevin Boehnke wrote a paper titled: Scientific progress. Untying the Gordian knot. He discussed his discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori in drinking water, which causes stomach infections resulting in gastric erosion and ulcers that have the potential to develop into gastric cancers.

Dr. Timothy Eastman's book is titled Untying the Gordian Knot. Progress, Reality and Context, published in 2020. In the book, he summarized 13 scientific articles written by various authors, and he credited all of them with the honor of untying the Gordian knot.

If one wonders what odds the London Bookies are placing for the following events, which are likely to be solved by someone in the next decade.

Technology billionaires bet on the future of humanity:

The tech giant organizations are planning to transport humans and life-sustaining materials to Mars and to habitable moons of the solar system. Some critic sees a dark side in this project, but so far, the critics are vague about what they suspect.

Wormholes:

These are tunnels through the Space-Time in between distant galaxies. Einstein predicted this in his theory of general relativity. May scientists believe that it is only a matter of time before they are proved to exist. This will greatly shorten travel time for intergalactic travel.

Unified Field Theory:

Einstein spent several years searching for a single theory that could unify Gravity and Electromagnetism with Quantum mechanics. Who is coming with that Theory of Everything, and when?

Unify Theory of Cancer:

Research has identified risk factors and harmful agents in the environment, virus infections, systemic diseases, and mutations of genes for cancers. Is there any common link among these known causes of cancer; if discovered, then specific corrective actions will be achieved.

A Ladder to the Moon:

Russian scientist Tsiolkovsky envisioned a massive Sky Ladder to the moon, which would overcome Gravity. This ladder could be used to ferry people and material to distant planets. Japan has a modified plan to use a rope ladder from an encircling satellite to the moon, but two recent attempts were not successful.

Cryonics:

The cryonics companies are promoting preserving dead bodies in a deep freeze and reviving the dead when that technology is available. Will there be such technology in the future and who would like to live another 100 years in a body that was in a poor fictional state and perhaps deformed at the time of death.

But you may have difficulty in reversing a place because of a high demand.
