In September 1971, the British Medical Journal of Nutrition reported nails of malnourished children are harder than healthy adults. When malnourished children are fed, their nails turn softer. The main protein of the nail is Keratin, which gives nails their hardness. On a Mohs scale, the nails of a healthy adult have a hardness of 2.5, and a diamond has a perfect 10.

Bones also have keratin, but keratin is not the main protein of the bones. DXA  scans of bones correlated well with brittleness of bones, a term used to indicate fracture risk, but Osteoporosis (weak matrix due to imperfection of keratin) is much more prevalent, and it can be detected by Raman Spectroscopy.

Recent interest in correlating the concentration of heavy metals in nails with systemic diseases by early detection has improved intervention outcomes. Concentration of the Micronutrients with heart diseases and high BP, zinc and selenium of the toenails with heart attacks.

What is the hardest thing to crack open if posed to a young man; after a moment of hesitation and with a flushed face, he might say “the heart of a young lady”. That is a matter of the heart. But in the materialistic world, the correct answer is Lonsdaleite. It is a hexagonal diamond, an allotrope of Carbon. It is extremely hard and much harder than cubic diamond (Natural diamond), found in meteorites.
