Our Magnetic Earth

The Earth feels solid under our feet. We live on the mantle of the Earth in geological terms. The mantle of the earth is made up of soil, sand stones and mountains. The center of the Earth, the core, is made up of iron and nickel. The outer part of the core is liquid due to very high temperature, the primordial heat retained from the day the Earth was born some 4.6 billion years ago. The center part of the core is solid because of very high pressure, about 250 gigapascals. As the earth rotates around on its axis, the liquid outer core rotates in between the solid inner core and mantle. This rotation generates electricity due to the dynamo effect. The liquid iron becomes magnetized. The compass needle points to the north direction; actually, the North is the South pole of the Earth, [the opposite poles attract each other and similar poles repulse.]
In our solar system Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune have magnetic fields. Jupiter’s magnet is the strongest.
The Earth is a big bar magnet. The magnetic force encircles the whole Earth and extends several miles into the atmosphere. It is now confirmed that Earth's magnetic field extends to the moon and protects the moon from the solar radiation during moon's morning hours in the waxing phase of the moon.
Like waves in the ocean, the liquid core is moving continuously due to its axial rotation, and the axial rotation is not smooth but the poles wobble like a spinning top. This causes the true North pole and magnetic north pole to be at different locations. The present magnetic north pole is some 200 miles from the true north pole.
How important is the Magnetic Earth:
The migrating birds use the magnetic poles for navigation. The magnetic force of the Earth is much weaker than the refrigerator magnets, but it is strong enough to protect the Earth from the solar radiation and keeps the Ozone layer from flying away in space. It protects our power grids from power surge; the weather satellites use it for forecasting and issuing warnings of an approaching severe weather and tornado heading towards a community, mapping depends on GPS like driving a new generation of automobiles.
Pole Reversal:
The poles, in turns, drip over a period of 6 months towards the sun till it has dipped 23.5 degrees. Back and forth dipping of poles generates turbulence in the liquid core and sometimes the whole liquid mass flips over - the south pole becomes north pole and vice versa. Similar to spilling the whole dish of Jello on getting bumped while walking with it.
The reversal of poles happens every 200, 000 to 300, 000 years and has happened several times during the life of the Earth. The last pole reversal happened some 780,000 years ago. Each pole reversal produced catastrophic loss of animals and plants. Currently the pole reversal is overdue, however, the pole reversal happens over several years.
Adverse effects of Pole Reversal:
Migratory birds will perish; sea turtles, dolphins and whales may disappear altogether. Those fish that find rivers to spawn may miss their destination and will face catastrophe.
All living animals and plants will receive more cosmic rays and solar radiation. There will be more genetic mutations and cancers.
The modern human society will come to a screeching stop due to disruption of power supply, satellite communications.
One big benefit will be the temporary stoppage of war because all smart projectiles will miss their targets.
