We see only one face of the moon, that too, by a few fortunate ones who live in the remote villages, where light pollution has not reached yet.

It is amazing that we are so interested in space travel, especially the exploration of the moon and Mars, and have spent so much money and effort. However, how many people can tell what phase of the moon they are seeing when they look at the moon at night? Even the TV weather person does not care to show the correct photo of the phase of the moon.

The moon rotates on its axis and goes around the Earth. The Moon's rotation period is exactly the same as its orbital period around Earth. That is why from the Earth, the far side of the moon is not visible. This is not unique to our moon only; the moons of other planets also exhibit this characteristic, called Tidal locking. The tidal locking results from the gravity and the dynamics of orbiting bodies.

The unseen side of the moon was called by various names, like dark side, the other side, but perhaps the unseen side is a better term to use.

The science fiction writers had a bonanza with the dark side of the moon, and they gave us so many weird, spooky stories that are great to read. Also, some good love stories about the princess of the moon secretly visiting earthlings and falling in love, etc. Scientists were more reserved and expected to see things not too different than the side we are familiar with. The first picture of the unseen side was photographed on January 3, 2019, by the Soviets. The photographs showed this side of a much more rugged landscape, had more impact craters, and no evidence of anyone living there.

Technically, landing a spacecraft on the far side of the moon is much more difficult due to blocked communication by the moon itself. The Chinese were the first and also the last having successfully land a spacecraft on the unseen side of the moon on January 3, 2019, and collect rock samples. India came close, but two of their missions failed.

Chinese found many more impact craters, more recent volcanic activities, and the rocks were thicker and stickier than those found on the near side.

Nations are serious about establishing a colony on the moon. The usual talks are around making a base camp on the moon for a future rest stop on the way to Mars, harvesting minerals for manufacturing structures and appliances for living quarters in subterranean living on Mars. But there must be national security reasons that are kept secret. China, India, Russia, and the USA are leading the race. But recent trimmed NASA funding will bound to have some adverse effects on the USA's efforts.

To the supporters of the other party and a section of independent-minded people, see this as an opening of a cult like atmosphere to develop in the US.
