Renal Transplant
PKGhatak, MD
No.20.
Renal transplantation is in high demand in the USA and even more so in other parts of the world. In most cases, the kidney failure is a slow process and takes several years. In advanced countries the renal failure can be further slowed with medical treatment before a kidney transplant becomes essential. The increasing incidence of Type II diabetes is one of the main reasons for the increase. Liver transplant, heart, and lung transplants are also on the rise, but the incidence is not near that of the renal transplant rate.
In an article, Mr. Jim McCartney, a freelance writer, states that at a given time, 90,000 patients are waiting for a kidney transplant in the US alone. Each year, more transplants are performed, but the waiting list keeps growing faster, and in 2022, the waiting list was three times the number of transplants.
Medical organisations, volunteering organizations, the state and Federal governments are working towards improving this situation. Several changes came over the years regarding the process of selecting kidneys from dead and living donors, and specially for an equitable distribution of the harvested kidneys among those waiting for transplants. However, the situation has not changed much.
If you are a family member of one waiting for a transplant, then you also must know the back market in the kidney transplant business. Rich patients fly overseas countries in Asia, where Medical Tourism is a legitimate business, and no one questions how a foreigner obtains a kidney from a living person on arrival. The newspapers and TV dare not expose this dark business for fear of their own lives; still, news leaks out of horror of recruiting unsuspecting young people on the promise of jobs, and kidnaps and forceful confinement until they pay their ransom with one of their kidneys.
This is not all the bad news for us in here. Harvesting kidneys, though difficult, still 19 % of harvested kidneys are wasted due to transport delays, failure to properly preserve the organ, failure to match the kidney with the recipient with in the time frame for a transplant, and reluctance of the surgeons use a “ questionable organ “ for fear of poor outcome. France is willing to take kidneys, which are graded as questionable here.
Like the sustained voice of women against radical mastectomy for cancer of the breast changed the surgical practice for less extensive procedures and the recent social media has promoted the 'Go Funding Movement. The plight of patients waiting for a transplant needs to organize a movement to bring an end to this for a very long wait. Do not suspect that I have a hidden interest in it, because I donated a kidney in the early 1970s.
