The world has witnessed many pandemics in the past, and recently, we are just about to witness the resurgence of COVID-19, which raged from 2020 to 2024 and took 7 million people worldwide and sickened nearly one billion, according to the WHO. The unofficial number of deaths is three times that of the official numbers.
Plague, Smallpox, Cholera, and Influenza pandemics visited this earth over and over in the past. The records of these infections were not kept in the official documents, but were mentioned in the contemporary papers and books. The first Plague pandemic of 430 - 427 BCE, known as the Athenian Plague, took two-thirds of the population of Athens, including their hero Pericles. The Justinian Plague of 541-542 began in Constantinople and wiped out a quarter of the world's population.
One can find plenty of such horrific instances caused by Cholera, Influenza, and Smallpox. Records also show that Smallpox was used as a tool to wipe out the Native American population.
Amid such catastrophes came persons like Edward Jenner, Louis Pasteur, Johan Salk, and the method of mRNA vaccine production. In the end, people began to see the light of hope.
Milestones of vaccine production:
Edward Jenner used a live virus related to the Smallpox virus and used that as a vaccine in 1796 to inoculate people against smallpox.
Louis Pasteur took the virulent Rabis virus, attenuated it sufficiently by repeatedly passing it through a susceptible animal, and used it as an effective vaccine for Rabis.
Salk's intramuscular polio vaccine was made in the same method used by Pasteur. He used monkeys to attenuate the virus and inactivated it with Formalin.
Sabin oral polio vaccine contains three strains of poliovirus. The viruses were attenuated by repeated passage in susceptible primates and finally cultured in primate cells.
mRNA vaccine
The mRNA vaccine works in a completely new way. The vaccine, after IM injection, uses muscle fibers' mitochondria to generate spike proteins. Immune cells consider the spike protein a foreign antigen and produce neutralizing antibodies. The antibodies remain active for about 6 months.
A dark Cloud is spreading over the success of the vaccine production and its use.
The antivaccine movement has been growing in recent times with unfounded, unconfirmed so-called scientific studies that circulate on social media that vaccines cause Attention Deficit Disorder and some other psychosomatic disorders.
People in some southern states are not vaccinating their children, and not even with MMR and DTaP. State laws are amended to admit children to school who did not complete the required childhood vaccination.
Measles has reappeared in those states, and deaths are also reported from measles. Given a few more years, measles and diphtheria will start taking lives and permanently sicken others. In 2004, the leaders of the anti-vaccine movement threatened to jail the mRNA vaccine supporter and facilitator who was the COVID task force advisor to the US President. It was not an idle threat; it was real. The President, whose term of office was about to end, pardoned the scientist for any past, present, and future actions related to his work on COVID-19. Moderna, which developed the mRNA vaccine, is being punished by the present administration, and all agreements for mRNA vaccine production were cancelled.
