Crystal chandeliers, crystal vases, and crystal aperitif glasses are admirable objects, and many rich people display them to show their superior taste and wealth. We are discussing a different crystal here. Take a snowflake, or a grain of table salt, that type of crystal we like to break open here.
Crystals are solid materials. When a crystal is broken down to its units, one can see that the atoms or molecules are arranged in a highly ordered and repeating 3-D pattern. Crystals occur in nature; some examples are Quartz, Diamond, table salt, and Snowflakes. Crystals can be made in the kitchen, but are more commonly made commercially. Making Rock candy in the kitchen is not only fun but also a nice treat. This process of making crystals of sugar is known as supersaturation, and it consists of two steps, nucleation and propagation.
We are drilled from childhood to be perfect, like a crystal clear Diamond. But a crystal with a minor imperfection due to the presence of an impurity or structure draws big money. For example, Ruby is aluminum oxide with a minor impurity due to the presence of chromium and is valued more than a diamond. Likewise, Sapphire is aluminum oxide and traces of titanium and iron, and Amethyst is silicon oxide plus traces of iron. One of the famous diamonds is the Hope Diamond. It has a trace of Boron, giving it a blue-violet color.
Stephen Hawking once remarked that if the world were perfect, then there would be no need for human beings. His remark was in response to the Gaia hypothesis of James Lovelock, which posits that the Earth self-corrects through feedback loops.
Imperfect human are more popular and their stories are valued more by Wall Street. The current political situation in Washington, DC, makes that point crystal clear.
