The Unseen Side of the Moon

Unseen Side of the Moon P.K.Ghatak, MD No 30. We see only one face of the moon, that too, by a few fortunate ones who live in the remote villages, where light pollution has not reached yet. It is amazing that we are so interested in space travel, especially the exploration of the moon and Mars, and have spent so much money and effort. However, how many people can tell what phase of the moon they are seeing when they look at the moon at night? Even the TV weather person does not care to show the correct photo of the phase of the moon. The moon rotates on its axis and goes around the Earth. The Moon's rotation period is exactly the same as its orbital period around Earth . That is why from the Earth, the far side of the moon is not visible. This is not unique to our moon only; the moons of other planets also exhibit this characteristic, called Tidal locking. The tidal locking results from the gravity and the dynamics of orbiting bodies. The unseen side of the moon was calle...

The Highjacking of Amygdala.

The Highjacking  of Amygdala P.K.Ghatak, MD No.29   Amygdala is located in the Temporal Cortex, and is a part of memory formation and temporary retention of memory, specially those that evoke a strong emotion. Amygdala is a Greek word that means an olive. The size of the human amygdala is about the size of an olive. In 1995, Daniel Goleman, a psychologist, described the circumstances when the normal functions of the amygdala are taken over by the fight or flight reaction. This usually results in impulsive, irrational behavior and confusion. What is the nature of memory? The long term memories are protein molecules. Two protein molecules KIBRA and PKMzeta are important for memory storage and maintenance.  The Short term memory is a combination of electrical impulses and protein molecules. How Amygdala is hijacked. A specific area of the brain performs a very specific task and, for the normal functioning of an area, requires inputs and outputs from several brain cente...

Sun God

Sun God. P.K.Ghatak, MD No 28. The Sun is about 150 million kilometers away from the Earth, and the sunrays take 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach the Earth. In the summer, the Earth's temperature can reach 50C °C in certain dry places on the Earth. In winter, the North Pole tilts away 23 degrees from the sun. That causes the water to freeze and the temperature to plunge - 40C °C in the Arctic zone. The Sun. The Earth receives only ½ billionth of the energy the sun produces. Look at these colossus numbers: - Sun produces 400 trillion trillions Watts in every 1 second. 5 tons of Hydrogen are converted to energy, according to E =M c squared 2, the rest of the hydrogen is converted to 695 million tons of helium per second. Helium goes to the core of the sun and is subjected to tremendous pressure and becomes brighter and brighter. This process will continue for another 7 billion years, then the sun will use up all the available hydrogen and turn into a red giant...

Microplastics and Nanoplastics

Microplastics and Nanoplastics. P.K.Ghatak, MD No.27 Before 1951, hardly anyone knew plastics, and today we are unable to live without plastics. If you pay attention, you will see that you are wearing eyeshades made of plastic, your shoes, shirt, dentures, hearing aids, eyeglass lenses, wallet, handbag, shopping bag, automobile, etc., which are either entirely or partially made of plastic. Likewise, plastics are in every part of the environment, from your household items to the ocean waters, in the air, even in the food and drinks you are about to eat and drink. And if you do not stop there, plastics are in the blood and in all tissues and organs of the body. On average, a human carries 1.6 micrograms  of microplastic  per milliliter in the blood. Microplastics and Nanoplastics: Microplastics are less than 5 mm in size, mostly around 1mm, about the size of a salt grain; whereas, Nanoplastics are less than 1 nanometer, invisible to the naked eye. Both are degradat...

Cult

Cult PKGhatak, MD No.26 The last presidential election in the USA has given all three equal branches of the government to one political party. To the supporters of the other party and a section of independent-minded people, see this as an opening of a cult like atmosphere to develop in the US. The Supreme Court, by a large measure, allowed the recent curtailment of rights of the residents advanced by the administration to stay in place in the name of a timely review at a later date. The question should be raised about what one means by cult and are there have been any past incidents when cult culture caused great harm to human society. The rise of Hitler in Germany and Mussolini in Italy, and their coming to power, led to the beginning of WW II, which is a testimony to the evil effects that cult culture and its adherent followers can do to human society. If we study the recent incidents of cult movements in the USA, we can find why and how leaders of cults come to pow...
